The innovative design and treatment process of Invisalign® clear, removable aligner trays have helped many individuals achieve a straighter, more confident smile. However, there are some common misconceptions about this effective solution that may discourage others from considering it for their orthodontic concerns. Below, our Salisbury dentists reveal the truth about five of the most common myths regarding Invisalign® treatment:
Myth #1: Invisalign® is the same as DIY aligners
Not all teeth straightening systems are created equal, especially the “do-it-yourself” (DIY) options you may see at pharmacies or drug stores. Although these may seem like an easy and fast way to improve your smile, they may actually lead to bigger problems since they are not customized for individual needs. For the best possible results, teeth straightening treatment should be overseen by a trained, qualified dental or orthodontic professional. Invisalign® has proven to be a safe and effective system for the right candidates, one that can treat specific needs correctly and in good time.
Myth #2: You have to wear Invisalign® longer than traditional braces
When worn for the recommended amount of time—typically for at least 22 hours a day—Invisalign® treatment can usually be completed in about 9 to 15 months, depending on the complexities of the individual patient’s orthodontic needs. In comparison, traditional braces can take up to two years to make the necessary improvements and may require more frequent visits to the orthodontist for adjustments.
Myth #3: Invisalign® is only for minor teeth alignment issues
In reality, for most individuals who are ideal candidates, Invisalign® can treat numerous mild to moderate concerns in order to straighten teeth and/or correct bite irregularities. In many cases, Invisalign® is often used to address excessive teeth crowding, overlapping teeth, spaces between teeth, and issues with an overbite, underbite, or crossbite. With that said, an experienced dentist or orthodontist will be able to evaluate your concerns and may recommend traditional braces or other options for particularly severe alignment and bite irregularities.
Myth #4: Only adults can use Invisalign® treatment
Fortunately, Invisalign® Teen offers the same beneficial orthodontic improvement for teenagers and adolescents as the standard version of Invisalign® but with treatment designed for the needs of younger patients. During the treatment process, the clear trays are adapted to account for additional spacing and ongoing development of oral structures. By utilizing the same basic process, materials, and techniques, Invisalign® Teen offers a discreet way to address misalignment and bite concerns without feeling self-consciousness around peers and at social events, as can happen when wearing metal braces.
Myth #5: Invisalign® limits certain foods you can eat
Because the plastic trays are removable, there is little need for food restrictions when undergoing Invisalign® treatment. Also, since you can eat with the Invisalign® trays out of your mouth, you won’t have to worry about food getting trapped between wires, which can occur with traditional braces. With this in mind, our dentists advise not to chew gum while wearing Invisalign®, as gum can damage the custom trays, and sugary gum can cause a buildup of trapped, harmful bacteria that may lead to tooth decay and stains. If you decide to chew gum, be sure to remove your aligners and brush or rinse your teeth afterward, then place your aligners back on your teeth. Keep in mind that aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day for optimal results.
